Perambulations, Piers and Penguins - Day 7

FWoke up at stupid o'clock again and played Candy Crush until it was late enough to pack my bags and shower. Left the car in the hotel car park and set off to get the tram to S'Kilda - first tram had two large steps at each door and no easy disabled access - checked the map and reworked it and success with our second tram. Got off at Ackland St and found a cool place for brunch (we lost quite a bit of time pfaffing with the trams). Another awesome offering. Then walked past Luna Park to the Esplanade and then down the Pier. Weather was a mix between warm sunshine, cold wind and short sharp showers. Small reserve at end of pier for Little Penguin (not a description of their size but an actual type of Pingu - they are however cute and diminutive!!), went down on the off chance - certainly smells of Penguin (guano and fish reeking rocks) - and was rewarded but a sneak peek of one of the diddy darlings. Sadly no wheelchair access so a photo had to do. Back to the main road and watched a small troop of quarrelling rainbow lorikeets whilst we waited for the tram back to Melbourne. Four attempts to catch a tram out to Queen Vic Markets and was just about to give up - found a wheelchair accessible tram (one out of the three I could see went that way) but none of the platforms for the accessible tram were raised leaving a good foot gap that I'm not game enough to try - when we checked. Bus stop and found it was the very one for QVM!! Lovely driver helped us get on the bus and we were soon arrived and raring to stroll around the markets. Sadly the stall holders had all but shut down and there was nothing to see. We walked around the outside of QVM and then found another accessible tram headed back for the city centre- the first was too full to get on (it being Friday evening and heading home/to the bar from work time) but the second proved more successful. We got off on Collins still too early to head to airport so had coffee and cake - not the best and too cold for me in the air conditioning. Back to The Sebel, picked up the car and drove, with slow to update Google Maps, to the Airport. Flight delayed til 2am, not able to check and no room at the Inn (literally no tables at the Irish pub), ended up with Maccas for dinner and then given $20 each for food at check in because of the delay but now feel to full and too sick to cash it in!!!! Waiting for boarding (still 2hrs to go) watching Adrian twitch and wriggle between being startled awake by the fire exit door alarm on the neighbouring gate. First time I had to explain what was happening as he woke up with a start and started to try to jump off the seat into his wheelchair- eventually understood what I was trying to tell him before launching himself into his chair but almost stacking it and hitting the deck! Trying to keep myself awake so one of us keeps an eye out on our hand luggage. Finally the inbound flight with the crew pitched up from Auckland, they'd had to get the windscreen changed after something hit it. We finally took off at 02:45, having spent the delay chatting to a couple of old dinks waiting for assistance onto the plane

  1. Tad will be very envious that you saw a pinguin. What is the point of accessible trams if the platforms don't match?

Stolen slots and Shopping - Day 34

A relaxing day shopping at DFO (Direct Factory Outlook) at Jindalee. Adrian and I  stopped off at Mount Cootha (one tree hill - they have them everywhere) on the way for great views out over Brisbane. I have fond memories of it back in the day being a cool place to hang out and listen to jazz in the sun in a Sunday. Sadly on a Thursday it was nice view but little less chillaxing with the tourists and some local politician about to do a TV interview. We got to DFO and spotted a disabled spot but at the near end of a one way row (wrong way as was no entry so we turned down the next row), as we got to the spot about 45 secs later I was irritated to see someone had taken our spot by driving straight in through the no entry as I got closer I recognised Stuart's Ute and had a quick chuckle to myself! We soon found a park at the opposite end of the car park. We met Rachael and Stuart inside and laughed as I told them about having stolen our park! We mooches around  all the shops and ...

Washouts and wizards - Day 33

Very wet lost time driving around to find a park. We finally are in the Queen Street Car Park belie Myers - very expensive, cos more to Karl there got an hour than it does o park in Southbank for a day!! Once we finally found our bearings an looking like we'd had a bah fully clothed, we reached Treasury Casino and stood being dropped on heavily by the disabled entrance while we waited for a security guard to let us in. Treasury casino has changed a little, I couldn't find the usual restaurant we used to frequent for our 5am, sober up breakfasts of the Fizz and Strawberries that Ness and I used to treat ourselves with! I fact it was a disappointingly crap brekkie. Time was of the essence as we had to get over to Southbank in time for the 1pm show and the we weather and paling conundrum had cost a good hour, meaning we arrived at the Casino just after 11am. Having finished our drinks by 11:20 with still no sign of food a different waitress to the one who took our orders double ch...

Fins, fun and freak outs - Day 30

Really didn't sleep well. Up very early to leave for diving, got everything ready. Left before Adrian, Jan and Stuart up. Said goodbye to Rach and Jack. Drove to Brisbane Dive Academy. Got fitted for my whale suit - which was a struggle before the kick off!! Met Mel (HR manager of an aged car company) who was also re-certify and Anna a German living in Brisbane for several years doing an open water dive course. Also met our instructor Sam - born in Plymouth, a good old Devon lad. Loaded up trailer and jumped into Damos truck for the drive down to the dive site. Thought we might be diving in Moreton Bay but actually drove down To Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast at the QLD/NSW border!! Unpacked trailer kitted up, rigged up our O2 tanks, BCDs etc. First dive hoping to tick off most of the compulsory skills - mask work, fin pivots. Walked down some rocky steps into the water had trouble getting my fins on. Got to dive flag and followed the line down to bottom, equalising fine but diffic...
