Ice Cream Dreams - Day 37

Nice brekkie on veranda again, bacon and eggs for adrian, chia seeds and coconut pudding with fresh fruit and some homemade bread got me. Got going over Daintree towards Cape trib again and stopped in at the Daintree discovery centre - aerial walkway is wheelchair accessible - 11m up into the rainforest and quite a lovely view. I left adrian in the discovery centre and climbed up the 23m tower for a view out over the top of the canopy. Much warmer up there with beautiful view over the forest. Sadly no cassowaries to b seen. Watched a video about archerFish - cool fish that essentially use their mouths like a water pistol to knock there pray off over hanging branches into the water, very nifty! I did a quick low level walk (three of them but all sadly have stairs)  on the cassowary corridor but again no birds seen. We jumped in the car and about 500m down the track was the Jindalba track partly accessible walk into the rainforest and then I walked the rest, not very far, but far enough to justify stopping for a Floravilla biodynamic ice cream - made by a lovely lady called  (I'd place her in her 80's) - I had coffee cream whilst Adrian went for chocolate indulgence as his preferred choice of Guinness ice cream wasn't available today! We then had a quick look around Betty's art gallery - pretty paintings but not all my taste though a couple might have made it into the collection if I'd had the room in my luggage. Betty's paintings currently share the gallery with a nesting olive-backed sun bird who kept popping in and out yo make sure we weren't up to any mischief. We said goodbye to Betty who is looking to sell on the ice cream business and concentrate on her art if anyone's interested. I've just looked Betty up - she is world renowned and was born in 1935 https://www.tourismportdouglas.com.au/fileadmin/pdmag/16/files/assets/basic-html/page76.html

We drove on towards cape trib and stopped at Dubuji boardwalk - really nice plastic based boardwalk - easy to wheel over and nice views of the rainforest, just as humid but slightly cooler than the usual 30 degrees. We braved the walk in the opposite direction and got most of the way to Myalls beach - oh for a couple of straps and a JolTer or two and this trip would've been much easier!! No rest for the wicked however and we drove on to Marrdja Botanic boardwalk, we were greeted in the car park by a couple of chickens but shooed them away and started the walk, a mixture of wooden and plastic boardwalk, this one takes you out to the Daintree River and through the mangroves as well as through rainforest. The cool breeze from the river was most welcome. To reward our efforts we got to visit the second ice cream maker in the Daintree, set in a tropical fruit farm today's wares included Banana, mango, wattleseed and soursop. Sadly it came as a ready prepared scoop of each - I explained my strong hatred of all things banana and she kindly made me up a fresh tub with coconut instead of banana- it was delicious but the soursop was my favourite - a bit like lemonade flavour!

We jumped back into the car - drove to Cow Bay - couldn't see much from the car park and I'd lost the will to walk/wheel by then so we drove back over the ferry for the last time and soon after the heavens opened - a torrential downpour typical of far North Queensland. Got pretty wet getting back into the room, but dried off and chilled out for an hour before heading to the pub for dinner - steak again for Adrian and chicken parmi for me washed down with a nice bottle of Carlton dry!

Stolen slots and Shopping - Day 34

A relaxing day shopping at DFO (Direct Factory Outlook) at Jindalee. Adrian and I  stopped off at Mount Cootha (one tree hill - they have them everywhere) on the way for great views out over Brisbane. I have fond memories of it back in the day being a cool place to hang out and listen to jazz in the sun in a Sunday. Sadly on a Thursday it was nice view but little less chillaxing with the tourists and some local politician about to do a TV interview. We got to DFO and spotted a disabled spot but at the near end of a one way row (wrong way as was no entry so we turned down the next row), as we got to the spot about 45 secs later I was irritated to see someone had taken our spot by driving straight in through the no entry as I got closer I recognised Stuart's Ute and had a quick chuckle to myself! We soon found a park at the opposite end of the car park. We met Rachael and Stuart inside and laughed as I told them about having stolen our park! We mooches around  all the shops and ...

Washouts and wizards - Day 33

Very wet lost time driving around to find a park. We finally are in the Queen Street Car Park belie Myers - very expensive, cos more to Karl there got an hour than it does o park in Southbank for a day!! Once we finally found our bearings an looking like we'd had a bah fully clothed, we reached Treasury Casino and stood being dropped on heavily by the disabled entrance while we waited for a security guard to let us in. Treasury casino has changed a little, I couldn't find the usual restaurant we used to frequent for our 5am, sober up breakfasts of the Fizz and Strawberries that Ness and I used to treat ourselves with! I fact it was a disappointingly crap brekkie. Time was of the essence as we had to get over to Southbank in time for the 1pm show and the we weather and paling conundrum had cost a good hour, meaning we arrived at the Casino just after 11am. Having finished our drinks by 11:20 with still no sign of food a different waitress to the one who took our orders double ch...

Fins, fun and freak outs - Day 30

Really didn't sleep well. Up very early to leave for diving, got everything ready. Left before Adrian, Jan and Stuart up. Said goodbye to Rach and Jack. Drove to Brisbane Dive Academy. Got fitted for my whale suit - which was a struggle before the kick off!! Met Mel (HR manager of an aged car company) who was also re-certify and Anna a German living in Brisbane for several years doing an open water dive course. Also met our instructor Sam - born in Plymouth, a good old Devon lad. Loaded up trailer and jumped into Damos truck for the drive down to the dive site. Thought we might be diving in Moreton Bay but actually drove down To Tweed Heads on the Gold Coast at the QLD/NSW border!! Unpacked trailer kitted up, rigged up our O2 tanks, BCDs etc. First dive hoping to tick off most of the compulsory skills - mask work, fin pivots. Walked down some rocky steps into the water had trouble getting my fins on. Got to dive flag and followed the line down to bottom, equalising fine but diffic...
